Making the links between the economy, decent work, the environment and the global fight against poverty. The Put People First G20 Counter Conference is one of two alternative G20 conferences being held simultaneously in London and St Andrews on November 7th to coincide with the G20 finance ministers meeting on 7th-8th November. The conference will take place at Westminster Central Hall, a fantastic venue right in the heart of London.
The last few months have seen an unprecedented level of public debate and policy activity on tax avoidance, tax evasion and tax havens. This policy round table convened by ActionAid and Christian Aid will take stock of international and UK efforts to address tax evasion and avoidance in an international development context, and discuss the next steps for policymakers and civil society.
Both the former Bush administration and the Obama administration agreed that, in the face of the recession, it’s essential for the government to use deficit spending to stimulate the U.S. economy — the only question is how big the stimulus should be. I would expect that people in poorer countries are hurting even more from the recession than the U.S. is. When the wealthy G-20 nations meet in London on April 2, what can they do to help, and why is it so important?
The current financial crisis is set to dramatically increase poverty in the developing world. Leaders should respond with bold new commitments to address the impacts of the crisis and reduce global poverty. As they respond, they should act justly and avoid repeating mistakes of the past.
