This Conference will be an historic opportunity to present alternative solutions to this systemic crisis which are founded on the principles of human rights and environmental sustainability and which truly take into account the needs of workers, small farmers and the poor.
UNCTAD´s first public symposium opened with a chorus of demands for significant international reaction so that poor countries and people are not ignored as the global financial crisis plays out. There also were repeated calls for significant reforms to prevent similar crises in the future.

UNCTAD's public symposium on the current world financial turmoil began its second day with a consideration of how best to respond to the global recession.

On June 20, 2009, hundreds of activists and representatives of civil society organizations from around the globe and from New York City will come together to testify on the impact of the economic and financial crisis on their lives, and prepare for the UN Conference on the world economic and financial crisis and its impact on development, to take place at United Nations Headquarters on 24-26 June.
Three days prior to the gathering of world leaders in London to address the global financial crisis, politicians, academics and representatives of civil society organizations from 61 countries have issued a joint statement calling for the establishment of a United Nations Parliamentary Assembly.
The statement, signed by hundreds of civil society organisations, developed at the World Social Forum (WSF) in Belem, Brazil.
