UN Conference on the Global Financial and Economic Crisis and Its Impacts on Development

The United Nations is convening a three-day summit of world leaders from 24 – 26 June 2009 at headquarters to assess the worst global economic downturn since the Great Depression. The aim is to identify emergency and long-term responses to mitigate the impact of the crisis, especially on vulnerable populations, and initiate a needed dialogue on the transformation of the international financial architecture, taking into account the needs and concerns of all Member States.

posted by pchowla | Fri, 12/06/2009 - 10:37In this paper we assess the outcomes of the London Summit and the UK government's progress towards the 12 recommendations set out by the Put People First platform in March 2009. G20 leaders have not yet gone far enough on the fundamental changes the world needs. The communique appears to have made progress on some critical issues but there were also missed opportunities, especially on building a green economy, and some areas where it moves in the wrong direction.
Where next on tax after the London Summit?

The last few months have seen an unprecedented level of public debate and policy activity on tax avoidance, tax evasion and tax havens. This policy round table convened by ActionAid and Christian Aid will take stock of international and UK efforts to address tax evasion and avoidance in an international development context, and discuss the next steps for policymakers and civil society.
