Prioritizing Expenditures for a Recovery with a Human Face: Results from a Rapid Desk Review of 86 Recent IMF Country Reports

This brief assesses the extent to which fiscal tightening is already or likely occurring in 2010 among low and middle-income countries, by (i) examining the projected fiscal trends in 2010-11 compared to 2008-09; (ii) summarizing the IMF’s advice to governments on the appropriate expenditure stance, and (iii) analyzing the IMF’s recommendations pertaining to social spending.

2010 G8 and G20 Summits

UNCTAD´s first public symposium opened with a chorus of demands for significant international reaction so that poor countries and people are not ignored as the global financial crisis plays out. There also were repeated calls for significant reforms to prevent similar crises in the future.

The United Nations is convening a three-day summit of world leaders from 24 – 26 June 2009 at headquarters to assess the worst global economic downturn since the Great Depression. The aim is to identify emergency and long-term responses to mitigate the impact of the crisis, especially on vulnerable populations, and initiate a needed dialogue on the transformation of the international financial architecture, taking into account the needs and concerns of all Member States.
